Self Care Brainstorm

Self care is a very individualized activity, with what is restful for one person being exhausting for another. I've put together the following list over the past couple years as I've learned more about what is helpful for me. It is a descriptive list, and I would highly encourage anyone working on self-care to make the time to discover what resources work best for them.

Anger Processing

  • Rock Throwing (towards water or safe place)
  • Shouting
  • Scribbling across a piece of paper
  • Controlled destruction of an object (tearing paper, shredding erasure, etc.)

Self Reflection

  • Journaling
  • Leaning into hard/uncomfortable feelings
  • Build an identity glossary
  • Asking why
  • Make something, then analyze your own art
  • Play dress up

Affirmations

  • Build / Review a collection of thank you notes that you've been sent.
  • Make a list of things you're thankful for
  • Read something by someone with similar identities to yours
  • Make a list of things that are awesome about yourself
  • Post an affirmation on your bathroom mirror

Resting with Intellectual Stimulation

Resting with Social Stimulation

  • Board Games
  • Share Stories
  • Sing Songs
  • Parallel Activities in a shared space
  • Ask for affirmation of belonging
  • Conversation
  • Call a friend you haven't talked to in a while
  • Talk through feelings
  • Watch a movie, TV show, play or other media with a friend.

Resting with Sensory Stimulation

  • Cuddle (pillows can be a great substitute if you don't want to be around people)
  • Take a Bath/Shower
  • Lie under weighted blanket or a pile of blankets
  • Swimming
  • Masturbation
  • Walk or Bike ride

Misc. Other Ideas

  • Hang artwork / revision your personal space
  • Read something familiar
  • Read something new
  • Try a new skill (just to see)
