Program Outcome 1: Foundations of the Profession

Artifact Name: LI 801 Questionable Content: Ethical Analysis Presentation

MLS Outcome: P.O. 1

MLS Values: P.V. 1, 3

LI 801 provided an introduction to the foundations, history and values of the library and information science fields. These discussions went far beyond the theoretical as the class frequently discussed how these concepts were being applied where we worked or could be applied in future employment ventures. This artifact, a group presentation compiled around a common ethical dilemma, censorship, demonstrates my ability to examine an issue from multiple perspectives, apply ethical standards and develop a solution that takes into account all of stakeholders perspectives. By building on a real-life scenario, as the item we focused on was both removed and later reintroduced at the Topeka-Shawnee County Library, the direct application of theoretical principles is easily visible. Additionally this artifact demonstrates a advanced familiarity with issues facing gender and sexual minorities as evidenced by the inclusion of the Cass Model of Sexual Development in the consideration of why an item like "The Joy of Gay Sex" might be needed in a public collection.

The service aspects of this artifact stem from the drive to ensure the collection meets the community's needs. Throughout the presentation there is a concern for the well-being of both the individual and the community which addresses the libraries role in facilitating growth for all parties. Additionally this presentation acknowledges the ethical dilemmas which can easily arise in information settings. By demonstrating knowledge of ethical theories, a willingness to explore different points of view and skill synthesizing these concepts this artifact testifies to my ability to navigate other ethical issues which may arise in the coming years.
